While the human eye is capable of discerning over 7 million colors, it is only capable of interpreting a fraction of that number of gray tones.
Given that gray is a variation of black and white mixtures, and that it is possible to display 16 different saturations of gray, then a computer which is capable of displaying 16 different lightnesses of each saturation of gray is capable of 256-level grayscale display. This lets a computer display “black & white” images with more of the appearance of a b&w photograph than what we traditionally think of as a computer display.
This is about the most grays the eye can perceive.
